With so many different varieties of milk on the market sometimes its hard to find which is one to go for. When learning about healthy foods and diet if you are trying to cut back on fat then full fat pasteurized whole milk can be swapped out for semi skimmed or skimmed milk. Food rich in Fibre is recommended as part of a healthy balanced diet. Adult foods should during the day should consist of some kind of fibre as well as fruit and vegetables, proteins etc to provide the body with the vitamins & minerals it needs to sustain health. Fibre foods which come to the mind straight away are breakfast cereals such as brown rice, pasta and brown wholegrain breads. One of the hardest things that parents find difficult to do is stop or reduce the amount of sweets there children eat. They can be given for various different reasons, as a treat if the child is being good, if they are trying to bribe the child to behave or as a way of stopping tantrums and crying when the child is demanding them. The alternative of course is to give healthy food such as fruit, raisins etc. but most of the time it’s easier said then done. As with adults with children it’s recommended to cut down on salt or go without salt completely if possible. Baby foods will have to follow strict guidelines on salt content are not permitted to have any added. If you are preparing food for babies you need to avoid it completely as there kidneys are unable to cope with it. When cooking meals its best to leave salt out where possible or take out the babies portion which in turn will allow the baby to share the food and meal. If you are breastfeeding, along with all the other key nutrients the baby will be getting the right amount of salt needed for growth and formulas will have similar amounts to breast milk.

When your child first starts to eat solids you’ll find a whole range and variety of ready made baby foods in the supermarkets ranging from powders, to puree’s to biscuits. It’s good to have a small variety of these packets and tins in your lader but you need to be careful that they don’t replace family cooked home made foods and meals. It’s important to check the use by date on baby foods as with other foods to ensure they are still safe to eat as well as checking the seals on cans and jars. Foods which contain wheat, gluten, nuts, seeds liver, eggs, fish, citrus foods should ideally be avoided before the baby is 6 months.
